Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky (1827–1914) was a
Russian geographer, botanist and statistician, statesman
and public figure, honorary member of the Russian
Academy of science (1973) and vice-president of the
Russian Geographical Society (1873–1914). He was the
first European to explore Tyan-Shan in 1856 and 1857
making important scientific discoveries. He supported
and organised several major expeditions to Central Asia.
The first census of the Russian Federation was held at his
initiative in 1897
