Christopher Columbus discovered America on October 12th., 1492, and also discovered Cuba on same trip.
Santa María (full name Santa María de la Inmaculada Concepción= Holy Mary of the Immaculate Conception) was the leader vessel, as Columbus traveled on it. Usually is mentioned "the 3 Columbus' Caravels", but in fact Santa Maria was not a caravel, but a carrack; a vessel with similar characteristics to caravels, but owing to his dimensions, and structure, is a different class.
When returning on first trip, Santa María got stuck, and could not be released, all tripulants survived, and the contents could be took of the ship. At last they disassembled the ship, and with the woods, they constructed a fort named Christmas, as the shipwreck occurred December 25th. 1492. Columbus returned to Spain on board of Niña.
