-------------------
Carlos Manuel de Céspedes (1819-1874) was a Cuban lawyer and landowner who started the first of the three independence wars in Cuba (known as "Guerra Grande" ("Big War") or "Guerra de los Diez Años" ("Ten Years War"). On 1868 he freed his slaves and invited them to join him to fight for Cuban Independence; is known as "Grito de Yara" ("Yara Cry").
---
Yara is a small town placed on south east of Cuba, where on 1512 Hatuey, a Taino chief was burnt in the stake for rebelling against Spanish domination; is considered as Cuba's First National Hero.
